Where is grafton gaol
Under the proposal, a portion of the site comprising the old market garden and industrial buildings will be transferred to the Grafton Ngerrie LALC to support better outcomes for the Aboriginal community and successfully resolve an Aboriginal Land Claim. Another parcel of land adjacent to Grafton Base Hospital will be transferred to NSW Health and reserved for the future expansion of health services in the area.
The south-eastern portion of the site, comprising its most significant heritage items and spaces, will be set aside for future adaptive reuse, with heritage protections in place to protect this beautiful example of colonial architecture. Grafton has a high Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, is significantly more disadvantaged compared with other areas in Australia and has lower levels of education, lower incomes and higher unemployment, according to the social impact report prepared for the government by BBC consulting.

It was amazing to see the large scale of both the timber and agricultural industries within the gaol. The quality of both the timber furniture and agricultural produce being turned out was an eye opener. They are a credit to their industry and a blessing to our community. Last Thursday Mr Morris headed up a rare tour inside the walls of the historic gaol for the media, in the lead up to the th anniversary celebrations at the gaol. Mr Morris said that over the years he has seen a lot of changes and had too many close calls.
With his years experience working at the Grafton Gaol, Mr Morris has retained quite a lot of knowledge regarding the gaols history.
