Why triathlon order

How does a triathlon work? What order are the three sports done in? Read on to learn more about the order of a triathlon. A triathlon is a multisport endurance event that consists of swimming, cycling, and running.

The three disciplines are completed back to back, with athletes transitioning between events as quickly as possible. A standard triathlon always has the same order: the swim is first, then the cycle, and finally the run. The various reasons for this order are outlined below. There are also multiple distances available in triathlon which are explained here. Triathlon is a fairly modern sport, originating in France in the s.

The first event was held in Joinville-le-Pont and consisted of a 3km run, a 12km bike, and a swim across the river Marne. However, it did not start to become popular until the s, after a race organized by the San Diego Track Club. Similarly to the triathlon in France, this race began with a 3-mile run, then a 5-mile bike, before a swim around the bay. These events used the reverse format of the triathlon order we know today. A few years after this, the first Ironman Triathlon was held in Hawaii, after an argument about which of the three disciplines was the most challenging.

Hawaii was home to three events that were combined to create the Ironman Triathlon. These were the Waikiki Rough Water Swim 2.

This event established the swim-bike-run order of triathlons. Depending on the triathlon event, the swim is either done in a pool or in open-water. Generally, shorter events are held in a swimming pool, while longer events are held in a lake or the ocean. These longer races usually require athletes to wear wetsuits if the water is not above a certain temperature.

Although they can be difficult to remove, wetsuits help a triathlete by providing warmth and buoyancy. Some events consist of a mass start, where all of the competitors start at the same time.

This will only be done in an open-water swim and can be intimidating for athletes who are not comfortable with swimming in close proximity to others. Where a mass start is not possible, participants start one at a time or in groups. Making the competition much more exciting and close after the first run.

Short Reverse Triathlon: 1. Other events like the Pasadena Triathlon offer a similar distance and structure, and there are many more reverse events around the world. Since these events reverse the order of disciplines, you will often find the swim located in a pool rather than the ocean or lake.

These types of events are great for both the novice and experienced triathlete, providing a different way to test your form before your next major event.

With Ironman being one of the most popular events on the calendar. Half Ironman has otherwise grown in popularity as people use the events to build up to the full distance, making it the second most common distance.

Following that, Olympic and sprint events are the next most common triathlon distances. There surely are others and you are welcome to tell us if you know of any more reasons. Why is the order of events in Triathlon "Swim-Bike-Run"? Swim Safety Swimming is the most hazardous of the three sports from a safety perspective.

Bike Safety If you have ever seen the Tour de France, you know that accidents do happen. Speed Open water swims are usually done in a wetsuit and it's much easier to take a wetsuit off than taking it on. Drafting If Triathlon started with the bike it would be nearly impossible to prevent drafting.

Logistics A triathlon is a sportive event that requires an immense amount of logistics because of the number of athletes and equipment involved. Traffic control Triathlons require at very least some traffic control which can at times imply roads fully closed to car traffic to prevent accidents between cars and bikes.

Athletes are therefore likely to have a much easier time taking a wetsuit off than putting one on. Some of the rules governing the other sections also bolster the swim-cycle-run pattern. Were the cycling to go first, it would be very difficult to avoid this, with everyone bunched up together at the start.

How Risky Is It! While every athlete is different, the swim is often regarded as the most daunting of the three sections. Open-water swimming can be a real challenge, more so when swimming alongside hundreds or thousands of other people. For this reason, along with enhancing the safety of the event, the start is often staggered, with competitors starting in waves. Swimming is also highly dependent on good technique, making it harder to master than the other two disciplines. Athletes do at least have the option of choosing their swim stroke.

Better Alternatives! While swimming is perceived to be the hardest discipline in triathlon, it really only applies to the average people who are usually weak swimmers.

In other words, not everyone is average, and strong swimmers will perhaps find the bike section to be the toughest discipline.
