Hope springs where is it showing
Top review. Touching and real and unexpected. The trailer and marketing campaign for this film is another instance of a collection of sound bites making a film seem like something that it is not. This is NOT a geriatric sex comedy.
In fact, I would not even call it a comedy. There are some laughs, several smiles, but most of the time I was in tears. If you go there expecting laughs, you may be disappointed.
I went there with such expectations, and I was pleasantly surprised and amazed. I am about the same age as the couple, and I deal with divorcing couples every day. This film is so real and true-to-life, with no big fight or over-the-top scene, which is appropriate since so many marriages end as a result of a collection of little unintended cruelties becoming unbearable. I cannot think of any film in which Tommy Lee Jones or Meryl Streep gave a more astonishing performance.
Tommy Lee going to a couples therapy session run by Steve Carell? The perfect set-up for lots of laughs, but then we realize the situation is really not funny. Imagine a film in which Steve Carell has absolutely no gags, routines or funny bits. Yet I can't imagine anyone doing that role better. He was in another film dealing in part with a relationship gone bad, "Crazy Stupid Love," which was a comic take and a marvelous film. Trying to find another film for comparison, the closest that comes to mind is Bergman's "Scenes From A Marriage.
I would have given this film a 10, but the soundtrack of obvious songs to underscore the plot became somewhat distracting. I'm going back. Ric-7 Aug 10, Florian Ballhaus Cinematographer. That's not to say that there isn't humour here but no-one plays anything for laughs. You can't help but egg the couple on as they try to save their marriage and although some couples may find this a bit close to home it's a lovely film. David S Super Reviewer. Jan 11, In "Hope Springs," Kay Meryl Streep, who is not acting anymore but imitating and Arnold Tommy Lee Jones, who ranges here from growly to slightly less constipated , an accountant, have had their marriage stagnate over the past 31 years, living in Nebraska.
Seeing some hope, Kay picks up a self-help book at random. Agreeing with what Dr. Feld Steve Carell is saying, she books a one week intensive therapy session for her and her husband with him in Maine, despite the fact that anybody who has ever read a Stephen King book could have told her that only bad things happen there.
In trying to be an intimate movie about repairing a marriage, the movie unleashes two huge Hollywood presences who overwhelm everything else. That's not to mention the scenes which should be touching that just end up being deeply uncomfortable to watch.
In the end, since all good things come to an end, maybe we should not mourn when a dying marriage ends, thus allowing one person to find happiness and the other to find a golf tournament on television to watch.
Walter M Super Reviewer. Dec 01, Ordinary but well-intentioned and very well acted drama. The focus on a couple re-kindling their sex life after many years of marriage is unusual for a mainstream US product, though the plot turns are predictable and the outcome is sometimes ickily sentimental.
Not awful. Daniel P Super Reviewer. Apr 22, Not to be viewed as a Romantic Comedy, though.. I found it very true to life. Meryl Streep, and Tommy Lee Jones, did a completely believable job. After decades of marriage, Kay and Arnold go to a couples' counselor, hoping to reignite the spark that made them fall for each other years earlier.
